My horse has hindlimb and back problems?
My horse is a 9 yo 16.1 7/8 Thoroughbred. When i got him i assumed he had back pain near the withers (worse on right side) and in the lower back near the loins (worse on right). He was out at grass for 4 months before i had him
He used to only dish a little bit with his front legs but now he dishes properly. When he trots he dished severly with his righthindleg. This leg also has scars on it that look about a year old. Now he’s started to dish with the other hindleg after he recovred from a kick. We got the chiropractor out who didntdo a whole lot, just freed his shoulders a little. The I brought him for a back assesement (about 2 months ago) with the vet and osteopath and they said its all stemming from his right hind. They confirmed that he’s sore all through the shoulders down to the girth and all the lower back. The investigation and proposed treatment will cost several grand but i cannot afford it and the insurance company wont pay out as its a ”pre exsisting condition”….
He also suffered a severe case of colic (twisted gut) and nearly died within the first 3 weeks from it Whenever you ran your hands down his back he’d dip severly. Now, 2 months later, he only flinches by and behind the withers and girth area on the right hand side but the dishing seems to have gotten worse!Hes also quiete underweight and Im having great difficulties putting weight on. He can be reluctant in trot and finds it difficult but enjoys the canter and loosens up. He does not dish whatsoever in this paces. In walk his front legs cross over, so he looks like hes rope- walking and cannot walk in a straight line!
I dont know what to do or from what he’s suffereing as it was difficult to asses him in the first place and the vet couldnt pin point what exactly as she needs to do nerve blocks, scans etc etc
Im in despair and dont know what to do!!!! I refuse to sell him as only the meet market will take him and thats A NO NO. Hes the most AFFECTIONATE, WILLING and KIND NATURED horse in the world The man i got him from supposedly paid the vet to pass the vetting….
Im mainly walking him with a bit of trot and bursts of canter
Any help, opinions of what he might have, commplementary therapies and/ or exercises etc greatly appreciated!!!
Ill ask about kissing spines!
Thats what they intially recommended but he was out on grass for 6 months before i had him.He seems allright when hes out of work but once you start again he just gets worse, but then streghthens him again. The osteopath said to do light work for a good few months and see how much he strenghthens up.
They recon there’s a pelvis problem to, stemming from the right hind
Ill check about kissing spines

the vets who past him, should give you compensation. you paid for a service which was not done or legit. id threaten to take them to court, and see what they offer.
it sounds like to me his pelvis. this puts alot of pressure on muscles by withers and down back legs, to be honest muscles connect from there every where.
usually due to a full, or as a youngster getting its hind legs trapped some where.
but then it could all ways be a disease.
as for your insurance company what is written off. if just legs. tell them your horse fell down a bank or something and he’s not right behind. you tell the vet that too.
there are ways round insurance, but be careful. make sure you stick to the same story. people would not recommend this, will prob get a few thumb down. but then your desperate and your horses is in pain, i personally would do any think for my horses.
you will want scans etc
i wouldn’t ride for a while. until some thing has been done to help him. in the mean time stick him on naf’s devils claw.
god i hope some ting comes up for you and this horse. good luck. and really hope this problem is solved
has he been checked for kissing spine….my horse had this and used to ‘rope walk’ especially going down hill he would zig zag.
also have they checked his hips
if they cannot find anything i would be tempted to turn him away for 6 months and see if there is any improvement in the spring….maybe his muscles are so distorted due to the problems he may need just to chill out and let all his muscles relax…maybe put him on an anti inflamatory like danylon for a while
